we had thunderstorms off to the west and then we have another plume of tropical moisture, if you will, that will roll in here later on tonight and early tomorrow morning. let me start with live doppler. we have some flood warnings in effect. you see your county flooded in here. this is a flood warning for montgomery county and fairfax and prince william. that means flooding is occurring. don't cross the street. you don't know how deep it is. these are heavy thunderstorms. they set up and almost set up camp in this area between gaithersburg and southwest towards reston and into shantilly and across 66 into manassas. they are adding insult to injury because rain fall rates are 1 to 2 inches per hour. we'll talk about the watches, again, the entire area under a flash flood watch. those are flood warnings in effect and that means flooding is occurring street or river flooding. in this case, street flooding. okay, here's what we think is going to happen.

round 2, 2 to 3 inches. as far back as loudoun county through the district and then unfortunately, the bulls eye once again is going to be south and east of town into anne arundel county, st. mary's county, you can see an additional 3 to 5 inches of rain. i know you've already had between 6 and 10 inches, but get ready for round two. we'll break down the time frame, also talk about what that means for the morning commute. could friday morning be worse than thursday morning? back to you. >> topper, one of the hardest hit area was in calvert county, maryland, and that's where scott broome joins us. scott, just how bad are things where you are today? >> reporter: well, just a lot of rain fall here. i was looking at the computer at the naval air station south of us. 8 1/2 inches of rain. i'm in the chesapeake ranch estates here in lusby. take a look at this house behind me here. a mud slide. this front yard got so saturated with water, the yard literally slid under the

foundation of this house, completely took out the foundation. this house has been condemned. completely unlivable with mud and water in the basement. just one example of the woes here in calvert county and further north in annapolis. a really miserable day with flooding. >> 10:00 a.m., high tide in annapolis. waterfront merchants scrambling to sandbag their store fronts in a miserable pounding rain. >> my basement is flooding because of all the heavy rain coming in from my neighbor's lots. >> but at the unfortunately named storm brothers ice cream factory, the battle was lost. when raw sewage began bubbling up from drains and water began cascading in, reid tried to fight back with a broom. >> trying to come this way to the front of the store. so push it right out. >> high tide flooded pedestrian walkways at the edge of city dock that left the parking lot flooded.

city crews closed off a number of streets and sewage overflowed to make a foul stench. owner, ryan got by with nothing more than flip-flops and decided that sandbags would be no help at all. >> our drains are actually backing up with the water that is out here in the street. coming up through the drainage system out here. >> there's no way anybody is going to get any business today in this area. you see nature taken over and that's something to see. good reminder. >> just an example of the many businesses affected in annapolis today, whole foods market up there got the basement flooded in its parking garage. back live here in calvert county, where we've had 8 1/2 inches of rain. we have a house like this one off its foundation. a lot of streets have been flooded here. the good news is, it's not raining now. the bad news is, topper's forecast suggests they could see another five inches here and perhaps more houses dealing with this mud slide situation

like this one here. reporting live in chesapeake ranch estates, scott broome, 9news now. they are just getting ready to catch a breath. scott, thank you for that. about 30 miles north of where scott is standing, this was the scene this morning in north beach, maryland. streets and homes were flooded there. high waves down the bored walk. people were everyone putting sandbags out to keep water from their homes. over to virginia, they haven't had quite as much rain, but plenty of people are still trying to dry out. suray chin is live where she has been checking out all the damage there. >> the flooded streets are just down the road from here. the water came fast and furious on brownsmill road. when it comes to these types of conditions, the neighborhood is on edge. >> whenever we get a lot of rain like this, i am keeping my eye on the water, the river. >> kate gets nervous in the downpour. the creek that often overflows its banks runs along the home where she's a full-time nanny

to three small children. >> it got pretty crazy, to be honest. we had a lot of flooding in the backyard. it became a river, and actually we are surrounded on all sides. we became an island with the neighbors. >> last month, high waters surrounded the home in the front, side, and backyard. today, a much better outlook. even the bridge that crumbled the last go around was in tact. thanks to vdot workers who helped clear debris across the region. >> this is typical of what you'll see when you get a lot of rain. this is difficult run and all across the vienna area, it causes roads to close. > drivers abandoned their cars from anondale. it was a merry-go-round of cars with blocked roadways. >> i was in traffic for an hour and a half this morning. everybody going really slow. i hydroplained a little bit. >> other drivers see the brighter side of a rainy day. >> i like it to be honest with you. >> you like the rain? >> yeah, i love the rain.

>> why? >> it is the weather that makes you, you know, it brings a lot of memories from my childhood. >> i was expecting more. i thought maybe we'd had round two. >> no round two this time, mother nature is saving that for another day. we've got a break in the rain on the virginia side as well. of course we are bracing for another round this evening and of course, these neighbors are going to be on the lookout. live here, suray chin, 9news now. >> in vienna, it's a creek that people worry about. it's the potomac river and the potential of it over flowing its banks, but oldtown may have dodged the bullet. peg, how did things get around there? >> well, i can tell you the potomac river absolutely went over its banks and spilled out. is this what is left of it. the water receded as quickly as it rose. this is the strand, the last street before the potomac river. but here's what it looks like earlier. the whole end of king street

was flooded and one woman took her shoes off to get across the street. you see, she had parked her van right where the street became flooded. she had to get it out of there in case the street was to get more flooded. but i mean, the water was sitting here on this roadway. there was so much water that traffic barricades were floating. over at the bell haven marina, boats were rocking. there was a man trying to tie up his boat so it wouldn't be damaged. things were rough there. there were park rangers standing guard to make sure things didn't get out of hand with the flooding. they had sandbags at the ready. and the city provided sandbags for its residents and businesses as well. >> i'm getting sandbags. we have flooding in the backyard. raised up 4 inches and that was just this morning and now we have a couple inches to go. it will come in the house. >> we haven't heard too many stories of flooding. mainly just sandbags.

a few people took them. a lot of businesses here are ready here at end. so businesses closest to the river, they are waiting here and they are ready. they have been through this before. the starbucks here, close to the river. if a picture inside of a canoe in front of the starbucks during hurricane isabel. so they are ready. they have their sandbags in case we do see some more flooding here in alexandria. i'm peggy fox, lesley, back to you. >> let's look at the district now and the rain sparked floods that trapped some cars up to 4 feet of water over on rhode island avenue. on reno road, lightning struck and brought down a massive tree. there it is. and while intersections were under water up in friendship heights, now crews are trying to clean up all the mess. coming up on 9news now, the largest toy recall of the year. more than 10 million toys and children's products pulled off the shelf. what parents need to know. top. >> all right, we changed the timing, if you will, of the

voters in montgomery county will have a say to call an ambulance. the maryland court of appeals ordered a referendum on ambulance fees being placed on a ballot in november. that reverses a lower court ruling which rejected thousands of petitioners. the debate is over the county's plan to charge up to $800 each time an ambulance is called. you won't be paying more for a stamp come january afterall. the postal regulatory commission denied the request to raise the price of a first class stamp. right now it will cost you 44 cents. the postal service asked for the increase to deal with mounting financial losses. one of those one, two punch storms. we have come to get used to this kind of thing. first it was the snow earlier this year and now we get all the rain. >> 2010 has been quite a year. that's all we can say. >> no rain. >> earthquake, we've had it

all. >> we do have a second round in here and we are looking at -- we move the timetable up just a little bit. okay. unfortunately, the bulls eye is the same. south and east of town. let's start with the computer. you see two plumes of moisture here. one is exiting pennsylvania and in upstate, new york. that's what hammered us this morning and a second one to the south and this is what is going to roll in here overnight. this is the second batch. it's like a conveyer belt of tropical moisture rolling northward. that is not going to change overnight. it's moving very, very quickly. we upped the timetable a little bit. we are talking again in the immediate metro area, 1, 2 inches east of town. 2, 3, 4, even 5 inches. we also have good thunderstorms off to the west right now. let me show you live doppler 9,000. you can access this on our website on wusa9.com. these are flood warnings. everyone is under a flood

warning. that includes george county, frederick. big storm now. it is straddling 70 back over to mount arie and another to the east side of 27. now we'll work our way south and west and we'll see some more storms around darnstown. that is rain fall rates of 1, 1.5 inches an hour. everything is going off to the north, northeast. we'll move a little further south and west and we'll see again, another batch of showers and some thunderstorms. these haven't been moving, so consequently, some flooding possible in here. also down 28 and this is a pretty big storm now. straddling 66. everything is drifting off to the north and to the east. so that storm is going to go across the dulles toll road here in a little bit. all right, let's go back to the computer. we'll talk about tonight. flood watch continues, breezy with rain and thunderstorms. heaviest south and east. an additional 1 to 5 inches.
